Question:
Cal sailboat (31') owners assoc...?Is there an on-line mailing list of Cal owners, e.g. Cal 31?
Answer:
-I do not know of a CAL listing or owners association. However, I do have
a 1979 CAL 31 ("Imagination") which I bought about 5 years ago and have
really fallen in love with. I would be glad to join such an association
and/or e-mail, chat, etc. My understanding is that about 360 of the CAL
31 were built between 1978 and 1983.
-I would be interested in a Cal boat owners group regardless of size. For
example, I had a hard time time finding a replacement for the rubber
rub-rails which cover the hull-deck seam on the smaller Cal boats. I
finally found one at Seals Spars & Rigging in Alameda, CA. He apparently
bought up the old Cal (Jensen Marine) molds when the company closed some
years ago. I have a Cal 34 which I have almost completely restored. It
was built in 1968 and is a solid as the day it was built.
-I just called Information for Alameda and they have no listing for
Seals Spars & Rigging. Do you know if they went out of business,
changed names/owners, or moved? I have a need for a replacement
rubrail on my Cal 27 and was hoping that I could get some from the
same folks who helped you.
-As the publisher of the Six-Year Practical Sailor Index I looked up
your query and found the answer in the July 1, 1994 issue of Practical
Sailor on page 22.
It appears that there is an organization of 400 owners and the contact
is:
