Hey all I just got a 1963 Cherokee 16ft Aluminum Boat with a 1963 65 Horse Merc
for 100 bucks and that included the trailer. The floor is shot and so it the
steering cables (pulley style). My question is, is this thing worth keeping
or should I Ebay it and make a few bucks off it.
-I am rebuilding a Crestliner from the same era. You can see the project at
www.crestliner.com , viewer photos page 16.The project is coming along
nicely and I am enjoying it immensely. These old boats can be very nice boats
if you are willing to put in the time and money.
Based on my experience from restoring a boat somewhat like yours:
If you have the time, inclination and skills and are willing to spend 100 -
250 hours and about 500 bucks (wild guess) you might have a very nice boat.
Make sure you know *exactly* what work needs to be done and that you can do
it. If you can't (or don't want to) do it right; sell it and let someone
else do the work.
If you don't enjoy working on boats get rid of this project, buy a nice boat
that suits your needs and be done with it. Spend the time you saved using
your new boat
-If you are looking at it as an investment, you will probably put more into it
than it is worth. On the other hand, you really can't go to far into the hole
on a 16' aluminum boat. So, if you have a use for it, i would vote for fixing
it up enough to make it usable and then enjoying it.
